Epidermal growth factor (EGF) is the prototypical member of the EGF superfamily of peptide growth factors and consists of a single-chain polypeptide containing 53 amino acid residues. EGF is a precursor consisting of 1,217 amino acid residues, which is predicated on the generation of mature EGF by protein hydrolysis. EGF is a potent mitogenic factor that acts by binding with high affinity to the cell surface receptor, epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR/ErbB).
