Fibrinogen is a 340 kDa soluble protein that is produced by the liver and is present in the bloodstream at a quantity of 2.6–3 mg/mL. It is a dimer made up of three pairs of different polypeptide chains joined by disulfide bonds. Fibrinogen is changed into fibrin by the action of thrombin. Together with calcium ions and FXIII, fibrin creates a stable network that guarantees coagulation.
