Androstenedione (also known as Δ4-androstenedione) is a steroid hormone produced in the adrenal glands and gonads and is a common precursor to male and female sex hormones. Studies have shown that serum androstenedione correlates extremely well with salivary androstenedione and individual differences in serum androstenedione levels can be accurately estimated using saliva as a non-invasive surrogate sample.
